Thursday's Torch Relay route (left) and Friday's route – click for larger image, esc to close
We've seen the Olympic Torch Relay ignite the passion of thousands upon thousands within Canada. Regardless of what you think of the Relay itself, its origins, or what it symbolizes, you can never take away the joy felt in the hearts of Canadians of all walks of life around this country. Tomorrow and Friday is Vancouver's turn. There are reported to be hundreds of protesters who will want to take their point of view and make everyone else know it, as though theirs is the only truth. Regardless of what happens, those who will try to disrupt the proceedings can never take away what so many have experienced – a feeling of pride. Several have contacted us about the route through Vancouver, so we're providing the details below...
The City of Vancouver provides the official route map here as a PDF. It has details of all the stops, and the exact times where the Torch will be throughout our neighbourhoods. On early Thursday afternoon the route starts in my old neighbourhood of Killarney, moving from Boundary Road to Kingsway & Tyne, then south to 54th and past Champlain Mall. It weaves its way past Killarney Centre, then along Victoria Drive up to 12th.
After visiting City Hall at 12th & Cambie it winds its way back down past Children's Hospital, then the RCMP building at 37th and back to Main. It winds its way across the south side to Kerrisdale, Dunbar then out to UBC. Here's a complete description of the route and the stops courtesy of the City's web page.
